Web Series Review: ‘The Beauty Inside’

The Beauty InsideIn The Beauty Inside, a Social Film directed by Drake Doremus, a man named Alex has a unique condition: every time he sleeps, he wakes up as a different person.

Developed by Intel and Toshiba, and released through Facebook, The Beauty Inside stars Topher Grace (Eric Foreman, That 70’s Show) as the voice Alex hears in his head, the true Alex. Alex’s physical appearance, however, is played by a total of 60 different people, some professional actors like Matthew Gray Gubler (Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds) and Oliver Muirhead, but for the most part are ordinary people who found the Facebook page and were moved to audition.

The Beauty Inside’s main story is presented in six short episodes (each under 10 minutes), but there is much more to the story than that. Alex has many posts on Facebook, asking simple questions about normal life, or posting bits of his video diary, through which he documents each version of himself.

Alex has been male and female, of every race. Sometimes he has medical conditions, sometimes he doesn’t even speak English. But, inside, he’s still him. He’s just a person, desperate for someone to see him for who he truly is.

Enter Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona Flowers, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), who co-stars as Leah. Alex has had many one night stands in his life, but he has never told anyone about his condition. But, when he meets Leah, everything changes.

I’ll not spoil the incredibly touching romance, or the beautiful end to the series (the last Episode released today, September 20th), as this is a story best left to unfold in the correct order.

I highly recommend, for anyone interested, that you find the Facebook page, scroll to the bottom, and read his posts in order, watching the Episodes and Video Diaries as you go. It is worth the time, and stretches the regrettably short story out a bit longer, something which, by the end, you will be grateful for.
