The Planetary Society attempts to save the Space Program

Bill Nye, Executive Director of the Planetary SocietyBill Nye is best known as the “Science Guy” from the popular ’93 television show, but now, as Executive Director of the Planetary Society, instead of teaching science, he aims to save it.

From planetary.org, “Earlier this year, the proposed 2013 budget included a 21% cut to the planetary sciences division within NASA. This division is responsible for all robotic space exploration beyond the Earth and Sun. This cut represents a major setback for the program. Major missions are not possible on this budget, and merely maintaining support for current missions would be difficult.”

The Planetary Society is a non-government, publicly funded, non-profit organization founded in 1980 by Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray, and Louis Friedman. Since then they have attracted members from 125 countries around the world. They are dedicated to exploring the Solar System, watching out for comets or large meteoroids that might come too close to Earth, and searching for extraterrestrial life.

In response to these budget cuts, the Planetary Society is asking anyone who is opposed to send a letter to the President. You can find the pre-written letter on this site, as well as other information on the campaign, including a video featuring Bill Nye himself.
