The suspect from Saturday’s Maryland Ave shooting is still at large. Police are searching for 21-year-old Joshua K. Brown, wanted for the murder of 22-year-old Javon Carter.

Man at large: Joshua K. Brown

Brown is described as being 5’10″, 170 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. On his left forearm is tattooed the word, “Verona.”

Sunday the Greene County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, Todd Myers, charged Brown with 2nd degree murder and armed criminal action. According to officials he “should be considered armed and dangerous.”

Around noon on Saturday an MSU bicycle patrol officer was on Normal St when he heard gunfire in the area and investigated. He witnessed a red Oldsmobile Alero running a stop-sign at Kings and Delmar, and he stopped them to investigate. The passengers included two women and a man. The man told the officer they fled the area as a fight broke out at the house next to theirs, and that they heard gunfire as they were leaving. He reported that three perpetrators had arrived in a silver car.

Police stopped a silver car fleeing the area at Loren and National. The driver of which said his cousin had been shot. It was later found he was actually Carter’s brother.

1134 S Maryland Ave, Springfield

Police found Carter in critical condition lying in the driveway of 1134 S Maryland having sustained gunshot wounds to his face and arm. Another victim, Brandon McDonald also took gunfire to his right arm. Both were rushed to Mercy Hospital, where Carter was later pronounced dead.

McDonald reported Brown pulled a handgun, confirmed as a 9mm, from his waist during the fight and shot Carter in the face. As Carter laid on the ground Brown stood over him and shot him in the face again. McDonald tried to seize the weapon and was shot in the arm during the struggle.

Four witnesses have identified Brown as the shooter in a photographic lineup.

MSU has reported none of those involved are students of the university.

Phelps Grove Neighborhood

Phelps Grove, the neighborhood south of MSU, has a large shaded park, a homeowners’ association, and a neighborhood crime watch. The area is generally known as a safe one, housing a mixture of families, young professionals, and college students.

One anonymous neighborhood resident said, “This is unlike anything I’ve ever seen around here. It’s a fluke occurrence. I’ve always felt safe here.”
