At risk of losing their jobs to legislation, area postal workers picketed Sen. Claire McCaskill’s Springfield, MO office on April 13th to encourage her to vote NO on S. 1789, the Postal Reform Bill.

Critics of the bill argue the bill would result in job losses, the loss of Saturday deliveries, and the end of door-to-door letter carrying.

If this were to happen, the USPS would lose the competitive advantage it has over corporate competition that only deliver 5 days weekly. According to the National Association of Letter Carriers, it could also mean that over 35 million households and businesses would lose their at-door delivery, creating a hassle for patrons and losing a competitive edge with carrier services who deliver to customers’ doors.

Fredric Rolando, NALC

Fredric V. Rolando, president of the NALC, called on Congress to take more time drafting a more comprehensive legislation. He says they’re moving too fast with a flawed bill.

“What the Postal Service needs most is a new business model,” Rolando said, “built from the bottom up, one that looks above the immediate financial and structural problems to find opportunities to meet the evolving needs of the American people in the 21st century.”
